Why Recycling Matters in Oceanside

At our Oceanside recycling center facility, we recycle a variety of recyclable materials including CRV items such as aluminum cans, plastic bottles, glass and bi-metal products. Recycling these items free up space at your business or residential property, and is better for the environment by allowing companies to reuse the material rather than disposing of these items in the trash.

Benefits of Recycling

Do your part in saving the environment by recycling. The benefits of recycling your items are:

  • Recycling saves energy.
  • Recycling helps protect the environment.
  • Recycling reduces incineration ash.

Contamination and pollution can be greatly reduced through recycling, in part because these items don’t end up in the trash, but also because fewer new materials are needed when creating new items. The use of new materials often requires activities such as mining and additional manufacturing processes that increase greenhouse emissions.

Everyone in Oceanside and the surrounding areas have a responsibility to recycle CRV items as their contribution to taking care of our planet earth. In addition to providing access to recycling centers, Ecology constantly strives to use the latest, most environmentally conscious techniques in our processes.

What is CRV?

CRV stands for California Redemption Value, which is a regulation put in place to incentivize California residents and businesses to recycle certain items. These items include soda, beer and juice cans, vegetable juice cans, wine and beer bottles, plastic bottles and more. All of these items can be turned in for compensation at our Oceanside recycling center.

As a consumer, you pay for packaging that you then discard. You can earn this money back through recycling. Bring in a large amount, and the redemption of your recyclables will be greater, making your trip worthwhile. In addition, you’ll gain the satisfaction of knowing that you’re doing your part to help the environment.

What Counts As Scrap Metal?

Scrap metal includes all metals that are no longer useful. From appliances to bike frames, window frames and industrial scrap, all of these items count. Usually, scrap metal is categorized between ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Ecology’s Oceanside recycling center buys both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Difference between Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals

What’s the difference? Ferrous metals contain iron or steel and are magnetic. Some common sources of ferrous metals are vehicle scrap, demolition site scrap, some old appliances, structural steel and metal offsets from manufacturing warehouses and industries. These metals are typically easier to process, meaning that they also have lesser value than non-ferrous metals.

Non-ferrous metals don’t contain iron or steel and are also not magnetic. These metals usually command higher prices for recycling. Some metals that you’ll find categorized as non-ferrous metals include aluminum, copper, brass and stainless steel. Sources of these metals include window frames, cars, bicycles, faucets, doorknobs, wires, some appliances, and kitchenware. Stainless steel is also considered a non-ferrous metal, which is an exception to the rule that these metals don’t usually contain iron or steel.

At Ecology, we want to make recycling as easy as possible for you. Allow us to deliver and pick up roll-off bins of various types & sizes to recycle your scrap metal when you have large amounts or if your business regularly needs to discard large quantities of scrap metal. At all of our locations, including Oceanside, we try to make recycling as easy and hassle-free as possible. Give us a call with any questions. We’re happy to serve you.
